Book Review “Enemy” by Kimberly Amato

Dystopian Science Fiction/Political Thriller

Trigger warnings:  Institutional cruelty, violent death, family betrayal

SYNOPSIS/BOOK BLURB

THE ENEMY COULD BE ANYBODY…EVEN YOUR OWN BROTHER

In this cautionary tale of the decay of democratic systems, author Kimberly Amato delivers the chilling reminder that every generation discards the lessons of history at its own peril – and that of generations to come.

On New Year’s Day 2045, a desperate remnant of the 20-year-old resistance prepares for its final stand against the ruthless tyranny of the new world order. As cells of resistance across the world crumble, this tattered underground – literally, housed in the subterranean tunnels of the New York subway – strikes on two fronts: the prison which conceals a sadistic experimental medical facility and the very seat of power, where the battle reaches its explosive conclusion.

Book Review ~ NIKI PRESTON ~ 5 STAR PLUS!

Enemy is the ultimate dystopian novel. It is action packed and deals with some very difficult issues. set in the future when Russia have practically taken over and now there is such a stark difference in class that those who are now seen as the lowest of the low. They are treated horrifically by some of the Guards and new police regime. Some of the underlying messages are truly shocking and I found myself almost recoiling at some of the experiments going on in the name of humanity. This future world is utterly broken, shocking and heart-breaking.

Those few left in the resistance, hiding in the shadows and trying to reclaim the world, have realised that they are fast running out of time. Now is the time for that last stance.

Enemy was written so well. It stirs emotions that are at times uncomfortable. The characters are strong and some are totally hateful. To evoke such strong feelings in the reader is a skill that makes this book even better. You are almost compelled to keep turning the pages, reading, feeling shocked, feeling scared, feeling you really don’t want any kind of this future to ever be a reality. A thoroughly gripping Political dystopian novel that needs to read.

Book Review “Takeover” by Edie Baylis”

Gangland Thriller

SYNOPSIS/BOOK BLURB

Takeover

She’s the boss now…

Daddy’s girl Samantha Reynold hadn’t bargained on unexpectedly needing to step into her father’s shoes and take over the family casino business.

Pampered and spoiled, Sam knows nothing about the rules of this glamorous but deadly new world. She has a lot to learn and even more to prove. But she won’t let her family down, especially when it looks like they could lose everything to their biggest rivals – the Stoker family.

Eldest son Sebastian hasn’t got time to pander to pretty girl Samantha as she plays at being boss. Rumours are swirling around the streets of Birmingham that have the power to rip the Stoker family apart and destroy everything they’ve built.

And Seb will stop at nothing to ensure that in this takeover, only one will succeed.

A gripping new gangland story perfect for fans of Kimberley Chambers, Heather Atkinson and Caz Finlay.

REVIEW ~ NIKI PRESTON ~ 5 STARS

Takeover seriously pulls no punches. A Gangland thriller just as it should be, hard hitting, hard to put and at times hard to take it all in. I loved every page and once I started reading , found it super hard to put down.

Edie Baylis has a fast paced style that really keeps you on your toes. She creates believable characters and makes the reader feel like they are on the side lines watching all the drama unfold before their eyes.

Family is the main priority in Takeover. There are splits in the loyalties that could blow the whole Gangland areas they are controlling to tiny pieces. A long term honour has held the two opposing families somewhat together. They run their own territories and respect each other. Suddenly that is changed beyond anything either family can imagine. Is the long standing respect about to fall apart? Sam really has no idea what kind of business her father ran and she certainly never wanted to be at its head. Can she blag her way through and keep the very angry and unpredictable Seb at bay? Well you know what I am going to say now, go out and grab a copy, set aside a few hours and devour this superb book. Beware once you pick it up you won’t be able to stop until its finished. A tense and brilliant thriller.

REVIEW ~ K.M. written up by NIKI PRESTON ~ 5 STARS

This review was done by my 8 year old Granddaughter. She had a great time reading, writing notes and then telling me what she enjoyed about this Finn and Fred’s Arctic Adventure. It was an absolute joy for me to see her loving reading so much.

K.M’s review….

I loved this lovely colourful book. The people and sea creatures were amazing. My favourite part was when the Whales appear, They were fun and I liked them a lot. The Northern Lights were wow and seeing all the sea creatures too, they were so cool.

I really liked that the book was so colourful and the peoples faces were so happy. The eyes of the creatures made me laugh. I really liked that they are all friends and want to look after each other, the rhymes were easy to read and I hope we can all look learn to look after our planet like Finn and Fred and the Whales. It made me happy. I would like to read more books by the writer and I would definitely tell my friends to read this book.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well I think we can safely say that K.M really enjoyed this book and that’s why she have it a full 5 stars. I don’t think you can get any better accolade than that of your target market.
Book Review “Queen Bee” by Nina Manning
Psychological Thriller
SYNOPSIS/BOOK BLURB
Queen Bee
In the quiet village of Helesbury, Miranda Wallace prides herself on being the most popular member of her small social circle; the perfect friend, the best mum – the queen bee.
Until one day, Verity arrives. Cool and indifferent, Verity is everything Miranda isn’t, but she threatens to shatter Miranda’s picture-perfect life.
Suddenly plagued with insecurities, Miranda is certain Verity is hiding something. And Miranda knows all about secrets and the damage they can cause, because she’s hiding some of her own.
So when Verity threatens to reveal the truth about Miranda and destroy the perfect life she’s built, Miranda knows she has to act to protect the people she loves – even if the results are deadly.
REVIEW ~ NIKI PRESTON ~ 4 STARS
Queen Bee revolves around the central character Miranda who has many insecurities and has an over whelming need to be at the centre of everything but most of all, to be liked. When her best Friend Evie calls her the Queen Bee of the village, Miranda feels that she has made it and only wants to cement this new found title in the whole village. Yet something and someone is right around the corner ready to upset her apple cart.
Throughout the book I was constantly willing Miranda to stop over thinking every action of her friends. I just wanted her to talk to Evie about her new found friendship with the interloper, Verity, but that certain something from her past seems to not allow Miranda to fully let go. She keeps looking back and thinking people are like those from her past. Miranda is definitely paranoid and has some issues that at times I found really annoying! However the author clearly wants to instil this feeling in the reader and boy does she do it well.
I really enjoyed the past and present approach to the chapters, which helped me to see just what Miranda has been through that has made her the person that she is today. The constant threat of danger and Miranda’s escalating downward spiral and utter hatred for Verity builds well throughout the book. When the end comes it is a total twist and not at all what I was expecting. A great ending to an equally great book. It’s a slow burn psychological thriller that lets you in to the characters lives, allows you to reach your own conclusions as to the behaviour them all, even the children are brought into the story expertly and we get to see life through their eyes too. I enjoyed Queen Bee immensely and would recommend to anyone who likes an uncomplicated thriller that still leaves you enthralled, with a great and unexpected twist.
Hunter and Meera’s romantic plans come to an abrupt end when they stumble into the scene of a crime.
A young woman was attacked in a hotel lift. She has traumatic injuries, but she clings to life. Hunter notes that her wounds are like those inflicted on two other women, who died from their ordeal.
Can Meera keep the injured woman alive long enough for her to identify the assailant? Is the same person responsible for all three crimes?
When Hunter is identified as a suspect, can he establish his innocence and lead his team to solve the crime and keep Edinburgh safe?
REVIEW ~ NIKI PRESTON ~ 4 STARS
This is my first foray into The Edinburgh Crime Mysteries and blimey what a start! A chilling and brutal attack occurs in the first few pages and that’s it you’re hooked. Although this is book 6 in this series, I don’t feel like I had missed out at all. The characters are brilliantly written and the fast pace of the plot grips you right the way through. Its wholly compelling with a lot of drama that the author, Val Penny has an absolutely incredible ability to get across. The violence, the police, the assailant are all written with a strength that holds your attention throughout. This series is definitely a huge hitter that will match any of the big well known crime authors. It is different with great characters that are likeable, especially Hunter, who is charming and unlike most grouchy police in some crime dramas. I had an instant liking for him and was willing him to find the attacker and clear his good name. This is a solid read that you won’t want to put down. A strong 4 star read from me.
REVIEW ~ NIKI PRESTON ~ 5 STARS
What a fabulous book Wishing Under a Starlit Skye is. Superbly strong characters that are expertly brought to life by the author, Lisa Hobman.
The main character Caitlin is a single mother to her daughter Grace, she decides she really would like a partner. The time feels right. How on earth is she going to find a suitable other half on the Isle of Skye? thus she embarks on a few disastrous “singles nights” Could the man of her dreams be right under her nose after all?
I loved the beautiful descriptions of the Skye scenery. I spent three years living on Skye and boy what a life it was. This book brought back some perfect family memories for me. Lisa really brings the whole Island to life. Her characters have flaws, don’t we all and this only helps to make this book and its story much more believable. The relationships between family and friends are awesome and wonderfully warm. We go on an emotional journey with Caitlin and I was willing her to choose the right man. One is so right and boy is the other one so wrong!
A beautifully heart-warming story that left me with a warm fuzzy feeling. All will be well in the world of love after all.
REVIEW ~ NIKI PRESTON ~ 5 STARS
This in my second book by Jessica Redland and what can I say except WOW! I absolutely adore this authors ability to create realistic characters that come with flaws. Jessica writes in a style that makes you feel part of the storylines. She introduces scenes with care, even the harder plotlines are done with a sincerity that you can really believe in. This genre often is all hearts and flowers, money no object and full of beautiful people. Not so for Jessica Redland. Her characters are 100% believable, they have issues and problems that resonate with the reader. As you read you feel an empathy with the characters. Sam the main protagonist is a wonderfully caring person who truly believes “there is good in everyone” She does not come without her own problems and has severe PTSD, which is dealt with in a sensitive manner.
Phoebe is a different character altogether or at least I thought so, but as her character grows I realised she is actually very like Sam. She too is looking out for her loved ones, never puts herself first and indeed endures suffering beyond belief to protect her half sister Darcie and her beloved friend Rosemary.
I’m not going to waffle on as this book speaks for itself. If you enjoy women’s fiction with some romance but more realistic stories and superb characters that you will just fall in love with then pop out and grab this books. Oh and of course it’s full of lovely hedgehogs that arrive at Hedgehog Hollow to be nurtured back to health by Sam. You’ll even learn a bit Hedgehogs along the way. A proper 5 star read for me. I LOVED IT!
Book Review “Daughter of the Sea” by Elisabeth J. Hobbes
SYNOPSIS/BOOK BLURB
Daughter of the Sea
On a windswept British coastline the tide deposits an unexpected gift…
It was the cry that she first noticed, the plaintive wail that called to her over the crash of winter waves. Wrapped only in a sealskin, the baby girl looks up at Effie and instantly captures her heart. She meant only to temporarily foster the young orphan but when news reaches Effie that her husband has been lost at sea, and months pass without anyone claiming the infant, she embraces her new family – her son Jack and her adopted daughter Morna.
Effie has always been an outcast in her village, the only granddaughter of a woman people whisper is a witch, so she’s used to a solitary existence. But when Midsummer arrives so too does a man claiming to be Morna’s father. There’s no denying Lachlan is the girl’s kin and so Effie is surprised when he asks her to continue looking after his daughter, mysteriously refusing to explain why. She agrees, but when he returns six months hence she pushes him for answers. And Lachlan tells a story she never anticipated … one of selkies, legend, and the power of the sea…
REVIEW ~ NIKI PRESTON ~ 5 STARS
Daughter of the Sea is an enthralling ethereal read. It captivated my imagination with such a force that I really did not want it to end. The main character Effie has an empathy so strong that she finds herself caring for an orphan girl alongside her own son. She could not love this child, found in a basket in the sea, any more if she tried. Recently widowed she clings to her children and revels in their wonder for the world around them. Morna, the orphan child, even as young toddler is drawn to sea and Effie slowly begins to understand this strange and beautiful child. When a mysterious man turns up claiming to be Morna’s Father, Effie is drawn to him in a way she can not control. What follows is a mysterious tale of selkies and Scottish folk lore that carries them both on a journey that they explore without knowing how it will end for all of them. Effie is a passionate heroine and takes the reader on a beautiful road to discovery of all things mythical.
This book holds everything that makes for a most interesting read. There is drama and tension, Love and loss, mystery and beauty. A truly mesmerizing story that I recommend any historical romantic fiction lovers to read.
Book Review “Hustle” by Owen Mullen
SYNOPSIS/BOOK BLURB
Hustle
What was meant to be a straightforward jewellery heist goes horribly wrong, and the thieves are forced to take a hostage to make their escape. But when they discover their prisoner is the infamous Nina Glass – one of the bosses of the most dangerous criminal dynasty in London – they soon realise they have made a terrible mistake.
Greed wins out over good sense and the gang decide to make the best of a bad situation. They send Luke Glass a ransom note. But messing with London’s top crime dynasty is a serious error. Now Luke must track down the gang who abducted his sister before they carry out their brutal threats.
The Glass family have other problems. The crooked cop they have on their payroll – DCI Oliver Stanford – makes an unwelcome discovery. The insider they had all presumed dead, may in fact have survived, and still be feeding information to the police.
Under attack from all sides, and desperate to save his sister, Luke has the reputation and survival of the crime dynasty in his hands – is this the end of the Glass family?
REVIEW ~ NIKI PRESTON ~ 5 STARS
Wow! What an incredible and brilliantly written book Hustle is. A brutal story of gangland violence, revenge and reputations.
After Nina is taken hostage, somewhat on a whim after a disastrous jewellery heist that goes seriously awry, her life is in huge danger and she has to keep her wits about her and a devil may care attitude to show her captures, not only how strong she is but how very stupid they are.
At the head of the Glass family is Luke and he is beside himself with worry over his kidnapped sister. Not only does he have to maintain his Gang boss title he needs to show loyalty to his family. Can he really do both without losing face. Which is more important to him? Will Nina and the rest of the family be shocked by his ultimate decision?
Hustle is a shocking insight into the minds of deadly assassins who will literally stop at nothing to get what they want. Why on earth did this somewhat posh unruly gang take Nina? Did they really think it through or was it all down to the beautiful Coco, whose shell begins to crack in her drug crazed state of mind. Is this all just a crazy game to her and her posh boyfriend Rafe?
As the end gets ever closer I literally could not put this book down. The violence that springs out of the pages with Owen’s brilliant and descriptive style is truly shocking. I found myself taking sharp intakes of breathe, then holding my breathe just waiting for the terrible outcome to come to its appalling end. How Owen creates these scenes is astounding and the finale, when it comes made me blanch in fear. I was wholly drawn into the world of The Glass family. What a completely awesome book. Owen Mullen deserves all the praise he gets for creating such an outrageous London gangland family. The Glass’s are a force to be reckoned with and no body could see the end coming. Highly recommended to all gangland story lovers who enjoy a gripping story with huge amounts of turmoil and a fair amount of violence thrown in. Who is going to win this war? Well you will have to read this epic book and find out.
As a foot note this is Book 3 in the Glass family saga.
Book Review “Heartcross Castle” by Christie Barlow
SYNOPSIS/BOOK BLURB
Heartcross Castle
Love Heart Lane – where friends are there for you no matter what
A second chance…
When her grandfather Marley passes away Grace Power discovers she’s been left the beautiful but crumbling estate of Heartcross Castle. As a single mum of three, Grace has no idea what she’s going to do with it – but who can say no to a roof over their kids’ heads and a chance to get away from past hurts?
And a forever home
Heartcross Castle is full of secrets – especially a lost security deposit box that holds the truth to everything… But when celebrity chef Andrew Glossop sets his eyes on the castle and, to make matters worse, mistakes Grace as the new housekeeper, Grace tells him there is absolutely NO CHANCE he is getting his hands on her home.
Devastated to have got it so wrong, Andrew will do anything to make it up to her – but is she willing to listen?
REVIEW ~ NIKI PRESTON ~ 4 STARS
Heartcross Castle is the kind of book that I will think about for some time to come. It resonated with me immediately as Graces’ situation was very reminiscent of my own, many years ago, so I gelled with her as a character from the start. I have felt her feelings myself and I think Christie Barlow dealt with the issue surrounding Grace and her boys with a confidence and delicacy that served to make for a marvellous book.
Grace and her boys are all very believable characters and I was just a little dubious when Grace receives her inheritance from her estranged Grandfather. I really didn’t want Heartcross Castle to suddenly become all mushy, hearts and flowers, as if by magic Graces life was better, kind of scenarios. Thank fully it really wasn’t this. Yes inheriting a castle at the worst point in your life sounds highly unbelievable but again Christie has a way of making it so much more than this. The castle is run down, it may turn out to be a huge mistake for Grace and her gorgeous boys. Instead she uses it to teach life listens to her boys. To finally give them a life full of love and laughter. Nobody deserves this more than them. I fell in love with the boys, full of life and mischief but always looking out for each other.
Then in pops an arrogant tenant in the form of the rich, good looking Andrew. After over hearing a conversation Grace finally see’s him for his true self and begins to chide herself for ever believing him. Has she done it again? trusting a man she shouldn’t once more? Is he out for all he can or is he hiding a better person in there somewhere? I’m not giving anything away, all I am going to say is that I would urge anyone who enjoys a good romance come strong women’s fiction with plenty of life lessons thrown in, to give this book a go. It’s brilliant and utterly heart warming.
Christie’s dream was to become a writer and the book she wrote to prove a point went on to become a #1 international bestseller in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia.
When Christie isn’t writing she co-presents The Book Show on Radio Northwich, enjoys playing the piano, is a keen gardener and loves to paint and upcycle furniture.
Christie is an ambassador for the @ZuriProject alongside Patron of the charity, Emmerdale’s Bhasker Patel. They raise money and awareness for communities in Uganda.
Christie loves to hear from her readers and you can get in touch via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
